Summary
Hitler's lightning attacks early in the war gave him stunning victories over Poland, the Low Countries and France, and brought Nazi armies within easy striking distance of the next objective: Britain. Still recovering after their disastrous retreat from the beaches of Dunkirk, the hard-pressed British forces dug in on their home turf, desperately preparing for the German onslaught they knew must come. Head skyward in the cockpit of an English Spifire for a pilot's-eye-view of the crucial Battle of Britain. Huddle in subway shelters with the citizens of London as Hitler's bombers rain destruction on the city in wave after wave of fiery night sorties. Got to sea s the Royal Navy battles the ever-tightening nose of the German blockade. And watch Winston Churchill rally a beleaguered people to fight on through the dark days ahead as "Britain stands alone."
